Faculty Resources for Student Behavior

When you're facing an instance of challenging student behavior, one or more of these campus resources are often a good starting point for addressing the concern and supporting you and the student. You'll see they're a resource for students and staff/faculty or only a resource for staff/faculty.

If you'd like to discuss a specific situation and consult about which resources are appropriate, Josie Kahlenbeck would be happy to do so. You can email Josie at [email protected]. Alexis Cuttance is informed about challenging situations faculty report in order to keep informed and offer support if needed.

Review the Classroom Management, Student Conduct, and Behavior page for detailed information.

Below are the resources that are most commonly provided to faculty when there has been an instance of particularly challenging student behavior.

  • Behavior Consultation Team (BCT): Student and staff/faculty resource. Provides a coordinated response to incidents arising from students who may represent a threat of harm to themselves or others. The BCT is tasked with receiving referrals from the community, reviewing them to determine the level of risk or concern, and then developing action plans to address the risk. They work closely with the Care Team.
  • Care Team: Student and staff/faculty resource. Central spot for student referrals related to students experiencing concerns, stress, distress, and crises. Staff meet 1:1 with students to offer support and resources, and they can provide 1:1 consultation to staff and faculty regarding students of concern
    • Josie recommends starting with the Care Team for any student referrals. The Care Team receives and reviews the referral and escalates it to the BCT when appropriate.
  • Bias Response and Referral Network (BRRN): Student and staff/faculty resource. The BRRN receives reports of bias incidents on the Twin Cities campus. It responds to all reporters with written information about supportive resources and refers reports to the appropriate office that can effectively respond through investigation, educational coaching, supportive measures, or other response strategies.
  • Eric Gorecki: Assistant Director for Student Support, Conduct & Resolution, CLA. Staff/faculty resource. You may contact Eric at [email protected] and view his calendar to schedule a meeting with him. He also has frequent drop-in times, which you can see on his calendar with his Zoom and in-person locations. He is a resource for faculty if you would like to talk about a student's classroom behavior, including but not limited to setting boundaries, concerning student behavior/communications, and more.
  • Consult Corner: Staff/faculty resource. This is a new, weekly program designed specifically for faculty, instructors, and staff, offering recurring virtual drop-in opportunities to connect with student mental health expert facilitators. Discuss how to support student mental health in your classrooms, offices, lab environments, and beyond.

Other Considerations

  • Add/drop deadlines
  • Financial implications and resources: Consult One Stop. Josie is not able to advise the student on finances.
  • Connect with their advisor. Josie can discuss if political science advising or the student's college advisor would be the best person to contact.
